Football has
always been a popular game to Tanga people. During the mid and late thirties we had teams like
Union, Gymkhana, railways, School and UMCA. During the Second
World War, it was usual for sailors from warships anchored in the bay to play matches against the town teams. Then in the
forties there emerged new clubs like the African Sports and the Coastal Union. From those two clubs Tanga produced players who carved for themselves fame. To mention a few, Kembo, Mbwana Abushiri, the two Zimbwe
brothers (Salehe and Omari), Abdallah Luo, Mweri Simba, Omar Mahadhi,
Mwameja, Mohamed Salim and Yanga Bwanga
